Lesson 11
Many products are gendered in a way that is different for males and females. For example, certain products will either say "for men" or "for women". This shows the differences in gender throughout our society perfectly. In this picture, a rhinestoned license plate cover is shown. It is gendered towards women because it is sparkly and cute. A man would generally not buy such a thing.
In our society, being the best is common between people of all ages, races, and genders. People always have to have the bigger and better things than those around them. It is essentially a competition to have the nicest things. In this picture, an American Girl doll is shown. These are extremely popular today. However, they are pricey and not everyone can afford them. Thats what makes the demand for them so high.
Gender objectification is a well known act in our society today. Men and women are depicted as objects that one would lust over. In this picture, Justin Beiber, a famous singer is shown being objectified by a girl. She wants him because of his status, not really for who he is. This is extremely popular in the media and advertisements today.
Not all products have to be gendered. There are many products today that are made for both men and women. They are universal when it comes the gender. In this picture shampoo bottles are shown that have no indication of whether or not it is made for men or women, therefore is not gendered.
In this picture, vitamins are specifically gendered towards women. It shows how certain products such as prenatal vitamins are only for women and should not be used by men.
